This year Bob Barker retired as the host of The Price is Right. The show has been on the air for over 35 years. Back in 2000, I was teaching at Arkansas Elementary in Aurora. We used to play The Price is Right in class, and I'd use it as a tool to teach math skills. It was there that I got the idea to appear on the show and send away for tickets. Heck, I've been watching since I was a little kid, so why not fulfill my destiny and try to win some fabulous prizes? And so an idea was born, and I made the pilgrimage to California, driving out there by myself, and hooking up with my friend Randy, who was living in Ensenada, Mexico at the time.
On February 22, 2000 we stood in line at CBS Television Studios, trying to get a seat in the studio audience. There were so many people in line, we were one of the last to arrive, and were told that we'd have to be on "stand-by" in case some people didn't return later in the day for taping. After keeping the faith, we finally got a pass to enter the studio. We were one of the last groups to go in. On the way inside, the producers interviewed audience members in groups of 10. Naturally, I was very excitable and made a bit of a fool of myself as I explained that I had driven all the way from Denver, was a schoolteacher, and that my students were rooting for me to win. When they asked my friend Randy why he was there, he said, pointing a thumb to me, "To watch him win."
That must have sealed it, because I was the 2nd person called to COME ON DOWN when the show began.
Here's part ONE: Come On Down!
And part TWO: Let 'Em Roll
I have other clips from the show that I might add to YouTube. It took me until the 5th pricing game to finally get on stage, and you can see how silly I acted while doing time in "contestant's row." Leave a comment if you wanna see more.
